Books, Girls, and Mr. Center of Attention

...by Deddy (aka, Seth)

I was grateful to have a few minutes to speak with Ms Karen this morning about John (grateful, too, that she seemed to be in good spirits with all that’s going on in her personal life). Since most mornings are go-go-go and she’s not there when we pick him up in the afternoons, it’s really great to get a glimpse into his typical day. I even told her how I sometimes feel like the daycare is a big black box he’s in for close to 10 hours a day, and since we can’t yet get his personal account of things, it’s hard to have the entire day summarized into a sheet he brings home with eating/sleeping/pottying/activities (along with various artistic creations – which I find totally awesome). We’d always like to know more, so she let me in on a couple of “secrets”…

As it turns out, John has developed quite the little personality and likes to have things his way. She said that he has really gained an interest in books (which we’ve also seen at home). At the daycare, they apparently have “regular books” that are available in the room all the time (which he uses a lot now) and they have “special books” which they are only allowed to look at prior to lunch (their morning cool-down), and after their nap. Well, if John doesn’t receive the “special book” that he prefers that day, he just stands up, walks over to the unlucky classmate that does have the book, and “trades”. The best part is that Miss Karen said when she sees him stand up, she says “John Fisher, where are you going?” to which he looks at her, mumbles something to justify his actions (incomprehensible to her of course), and takes the book he wants.

The conversation prompted reflection on my part, so I mentioned the night we sentenced him to a time-out in the corner of the kitchen when he was acting out. I told her we had, at that moment, concluded that he had sat in a time-out before. She said that he had, but only a handful of times for either pushing or hitting another child. Ah, verification… I probably shouldn’t have been laughing at this point, but I really couldn’t help it.

The other part of our conversation this morning was about John’s relationship with little Lily. Miss Karen revealed that “they’re just like brother and sister, those two, but they are great buddies.” She said that they hold hands when they walk around, yet they fight (mostly hitting) more with each other than any of the other classmates. I’m sure this is quite amusing because I’ve been around little Lily enough to know that she’s a little spitfire that holds her own. Miss Karen also said that Lily and John’s napping mats are located next to each other and that they have their own language they speak from behind their pacis; it normally includes “talking” and smiling and laughing (she said that they seem to understand each other). Eventually they both fall asleep while looking in each other’s direction. I can very vividly picture these moments and I can’t stop smiling.

Note: Traci would have probably been crying at this point if she’d have been there (I’m fairly certain she’ll cry while reading this).

These stories definitely provided a peek into the large black box I had described earlier to Miss Karen. Something I was searching for without even knowing it. She has to know how much we miss the little guy during the work week, so at first, I thought the stories were strictly for my benefit. However, her face couldn’t hide the pride she feels when talking about her kids or how much she loves them (which is more than I think Traci or I realize).

To top it all off, during my entire conversation with his teacher, John had started his Friday off by taking advantage of the Smith Sisters. It seems as natural as a favorite pastime. The Smith Sisters are two adorable little girls (approximately 4 and 5 years of age) who absolutely adore John – I’ve personally witnessed the fuss they make over him. The three of them had the gym to themselves this morning and the girls commenced to following John around, while both vying for his attention. It was quite the comedy. At first I thought he was oblivious to their distress, but I quickly became aware of the brief glances he would regularly cast behind him – he had to make sure they were still bothered with what he was doing and where he was going. He was smiling the entire time (he loves the attention– no doubt about it).

Great start to this last Friday in October…

Note to the above "crying predicition" - I was crying well before finishing paragraph 2, good thing I wasn't hearing/seeing this all first hand. I probably would have had to excuse myself :)

Happy Fall!

All's kinda quiet this week...

Happy Thursday!

Been a somewhat quiet week around our house. Everybody's been relying on the alarm clock - the littlest one mostly getting a special Mama wake up (full of hugs & snuggles). We've been trying to enjoy this warmer (not even close to feeling like fall) weather - even managed a walk around the neighborhood last night. Seth also got the pumpkin carved last night - pics will soon follow. I think it's precious, he thinks its too "simple". As the only house in our part of the neighborhood that usually turns on our light at Halloween, it's not like there will be many competing pumpkins. That said, I'll go ahead & declare it the official best in the cul-de-sac :)

Granny Worley is finally home (praise the Lord) after over a week's stay at the hospital. So thankful that she's home and pray that she will regain her strength and accept some help w.my Pappaw - she just doesn't need to be managing all that alone. Definitely a praise that she's home...

Now for the heavy heart stuff of the week - probably more why I've been so quiet...

1st, we got a note from daycare earlier this week...John's teacher, Ms. Karen - "her cancer has come back." Our hearts fell reading this news. What does this mean - she's restarting chemo (hopefully, only a few times a month) and she will be in & out of Sonshine based on how she's feeling & how bad the chemo gets. We don't know the kind of cancer, but it makes us hurt for her & for all those little children who do so well under her care. Please keep her in your prayers...

2nd, a friend from church, Kelly Morris- her mom is having a golf ball size brain tumor removed this morning. They only discovered it about a week ago. The dr. is "the best of the best" at Duke & we're just praying that it's benign. Given the location and size, there was no time to waste. Thankful this dr. was available in such a timely manner. Please pray for this family - for God to guide Dr. Friedman's surgical hands & peace for this family as they await the results...

Lastly, you'll notice there are now 2 "buttons" on the right side of this blog - Praying for Jonah & Praying for Tripp. I've been "following" baby Jonah's journey almost since his birth, he just turned 8 mos. Last week, Jonah's mom asked her readers to also pray for Tripp. Baby Tripp is an "EB baby" like Jonah. Please click on their blogs to find more about what "EB" is. More importanly, click on these blogs, bookmark them - I invite you to fall in love with these babies & families the same way I have. Their love, their faithfulness, their joy in the adversity of having these special little ones - they amaze & humble me daily. I cannot pray enough for these families and I thank God that they're sharing their story. Please keep these sweet boys & their families in your prayers...

Just a lot of people and families to keep close in thoughts and prayers. Making us more thankful and humble each and every day. Ok, my heart's gonna start to ache if I don't stop swelling it up so much today...

Add to all the above, I have a confession - I'm currently listening to Christmas music. Aaaaaggggghhhhh - I know, I know - not even Halloween. Just can't help myself :) Seth said I'm quickly on the way to listening to it year round - gets earlier & earlier every year! I said to that, "wouldn't that be wonderful - Christmas music, year round!" He should be careful, not give me any ideas, ha.

I guess I'm just full-hearted this week & what better to go w.that feeling than Christmas music. And after a weekend at home, full of family - the week just got started off "heavy." Yep, I'm gonna be a blubbering mess by Thanksgiving...family, Christmas music, new baby on the way (Haley), John, niece & nephews, grandparents, great-grandparents - geez, what a blessed life it truly is!

Season of Joy

She asked me when the season of joy was supposed to end
& I said I didn't really think there was an exact date,
so we left the tree up till June that year.

1st time at the NC State Fair...

this year's theme: "A Whole Lotta Happy"

hmmmmm? Mama would say a whole lotta people, a whole lotta traffic, a whole lotta dust, a whole lotta walkin', a whole lotta fried dough (Deddy), a whole lotta nauseum (The Orbiter), a whole lotta hand sanitizing & baby wipe usage, a whole lotta "Carnies" (Deddy's favorite word)...maybe not a whole lotta happy, but she'll concede it was a good time, just exhausting & a lil' busier than she's used to :)

Best part of my day, though - I was just sitting at my table w.Carson, Lily Y. & Lily S. - eating my after nap snack of milk & cookies. Suddenly I looked up & I see Mama, Deddy, Nana & Pappaw all walking towards me. I couldn't back my chair up fast enough. The tough part though - who to run to?!?! Well, "Pa - Pa" won (he was trying the hardest, haha)! All my friends looked at me like, "Where's John going!?!", but I didn't look back once - it felt like a birthday to have all those people who love me there to get me from school. I mean, what could really top that??

Deddy did win me an Elmo (which I love) and Pappaw won me 2 goldfish (although the Carney accused him of cheating - come to find out he was), but Mama & Deddy made him give them away b/c they don't want any more "Pissshhhhhh" right now.

Here's some pics of our journey to the State Fair...

Waiting to cross the street - we did A LOT of waiting!

Photobucket

Watchin' Michelle & her "Magical Poodles" - don't know which was sillier, the poodles or Michelle :)

Photobucket

Bottle-cap rug in the landscape/garden area ~ I can see Mama's wheels spinning!

Me, Nana & Pappaw ~ they were awesome stroller-pushers! I kept my fingers in my mouth the whole time (yuck!), they think I might have some serious teeth bustin' through...lots of drooling & chewing.

Photobucket

Me & the parentals ~ me still chewing & drooling : )

So, until next year, I suppose...time to bid adieu to the "whole lotta happy" place : )

About a girl

I heard a very sweet story the other night...one of the best ever, if I'm being honest (which I usually am)...

My Granny, who's more near & dear to me than just about anyone, is in the hospital. She has some gallstones, a blood clot they're trying to thin...just some overall miserable kind of stuff going on. The treatments/procedures seem pretty straight-forward, but it all means about a week's worth of time in the hospital. She's my Pappaw's primary caregiver from the time he puts his feet on the floor in the morning till she finally gets him tucked into bed at night - she is his lifeline in every way. Her being in the hospital is quite the "hiccup" in this arduous routine...

Thankfully my parents are next door & Johnny Boy's been able to look after Big John while my Granny's in the hospital (w.the help of some cooking from my Mama, of course). At any rate, my mom was on the porch w.my Pappaw Sunday night (Granny went to the hospital that morning) when he looks over at her & says, "That girl went to the hospital...she hasn't got back yet." My mom confirmed this, him going on to say "I want to go see if that girl's alright." He then pauses, thinks for a second and asks "How far is that hospital from here," to which I think she replied something like, "Not too far." She said he then got up out of his chair, walked out to the carport, set his walker aside and told her (pointing at my Dad's truck), "I'm gonna get in that and go see that girl." So off to see "that girl" they went...

Once at the hospital and in her room, they 'parked' the wheelchair parallel to my Granny's bed - her eyes welled up w.tears and my mom said, "there were some sweet smiling moments". She could sense that my Granny felt reassured that he was ok by him being there. After visiting for a while, my Pappaw stated that he was ready to go, and she told him to give her a kiss - she raised up in the bed & he leaned over in his chair & planted one on her...

In an email to my mom, I wrote about the above story...
"...cried re-telling it to Seth last night...one of the sweetest things I've ever heard about 2 of the turdiest, hard-headed people I've ever known. God love them :)"

There's never been anything cuddly or sweet about my Granny & Pappaw - spitfire, hard-headed, pistols - those are more the kind of words that come to mind when I think of them. At this point though, my Pappaw is a shadow of the man he was - both mentally & physically. My Granny is also "shrinking" it seems, in stature & spirit. They're getting old & I know they're getting tired...she tells me as much every time I see her. Don't get me wrong, though - she's still sharp as a whip and can tell you to kiss her a$% with the best of them. But I know taking care of him is taking its toll on her...

However, what makes this story sweet is that 4 children, a lifetime of experiences, good times, bad times, sickness & health - all that living & they're still taking care of each other. My granny's by far the more physically able - but my Pappaw's anxiousness to get to "that girl"...they're forever linked in this life, both still needing each other so much. Her tear-filled eyes as the sight of him, she needs him as much as he needs her...

I couldn't be more thankful that they still have each other - that their children still have them - and that I can still walk across that short lil' yard between my parent's house & theirs & know that most days, they'll be sitting there on that porch...that girl & that boy...I love them so much & am so proud of them...

A request for prayer

Mama told me today that a friend of hers lost her Deddy yesterday. She said he was the same age as my Pappaw Worley - the friend is the same age as my Mama. Her heart is hurting for her friend for so many reasons. Like Mama, this friend seems to be a Deddy's girl - she can tell by the way she talked about him. Her friend doesn't have any children yet, but was hoping to start trying soon. This part hurts Mama the most - she can't imagine my Pappaw, my Pop Pop or Grumpaw not being here to meet, love & teach me. She says I'm doubly blessed b/c not only do I have the most wonderful Grandparents, but I have some super-special Great-Grandparents who also love me bunches.

Please keep Mama's friend, her name is Erin, in your prayers. Pray that God wraps her & her family in His loving arms. Pray that He will speak to her heart so that she knows He loves her & will take good care of her Deddy up there in Heaven.

And to all my wonderful Grandparents & Great-Grandparents....Me, Deddy & Mama all love you so dearly & count our blessings to have you as part of our lives. Mama says you can't send hugs through the computer, so just make sure to hug & love each other today...

~John Tyson

PS. Have a great weekend - I'll hopefully be seeing you next weekend!

Giving thanks

At supper time, we sit together as a family to eat...sometimes, our littlest person gets a slight head-start. Once Mama & Deddy finally sit down - a lil' hand reaches over to his Deddy w.a "uhhh" - he knows it's time to pray.

So, I say, "Let's bow our heads & pray...". The other night I happened to be standing when we started, so I took John's other hand - Deddy holding one, Mama holding the other. I think I started something b/c now he reaches for both our hands...

I have to say that holding my son's hand to say the blessing is one of life's sweetest gifts thus far. I know he doesn't know what it means, I know his eyes are open most of the time, I know his mouth is usually stuffed full and he usually tops off the "Amen" w.a small round of applause :). None of that matters - he's learning w.out knowing. He's learning to pause before he partakes. He's having a special moment w.Mama & Deddy when we sit down together as a family. He's finding joy in that moment - evident by the applause & huge grin. He's making Mama & Deddy better people b/c of the example we want to be for this lil' person. He makes our hearts so full and our many blessings so apparent...

Um, can you be more specific...

Us, "No John" or "John Tyson, NO" or "No sir" or "Sit down" or "No, don't touch that"...

What I think he hears:
"Who me?" or "Surely they don't mean me?!" or "Really, so what you're saying is that you want me to stop touching this (pointing/touching for emphasis)?" or "That's funny when your voice gets high like that :)!" or "Haha - I like this game" or "What I'm hearing is that you want me to pitch a fit b/c you're not letting me do exactly what I want to do - is that correct?" or "Yeah, I was just waiting here on step #3 - I knew you'd be along shortly" or "So, you mean that gate's not for climbing?" or "I'm thinking you don't like when I pull the cat's tail" or "Do you really think Sae Sae doesn't like when I stick my finger's in her ears?" or "Until you get me my own dog bed, I'm just gonna have to lay on hers & woller around" or "I don't know what the fuss is about, I really think some of this food should be thrown on the floor." or "I will too kick my legs furiously when you're trying to wipe poop off my butt - I don't care if I get it everywhere." or "I can't see why you don't like me to pull things out of the fridge - aren't we supposed to eat that stuff." or "I really think that the dryer lint screen should be carried around the house - especially when it's full of lint!" or "Why'd you get the kitchen floor so shiny if you don't want me to lick it?" or "We've got 2 more - you should get your own toilet brush to run around frantically with, this one's already taken!" or "I don't see why it's a problem for me to stand on __________ (insert anything climbable - i.e. chairs, coffee table, toy cars, Deddy's laptop....on & on)." - could add to this list all day...

Yes, his halo does get a lil' tanished from time to time :)

"You can't handle the truth!"

And lots of other movie/tv quotes were being exchanged across the phoneline between Seth & I this morning. From seeing too many movies to reading most, if not all, John Grisham books - we got the courtroom lingo down pretty good. Seth's got Jury Duty, hence the courtroom-themed conversation...

Photobucket

Just talked to him. He said things are going pretty good, he's hoping to get chosen for "a big trial" - I think he's having too much fun. He said it's pretty nice - they got bathrooms, a deli right next to the jury room & he said one of the juror's name was Odell - a older black man all dressed up in his "church clothes". That kind of stuff (old men, church clothes, names like Odell) makes us smile for some reason :) At any rate, I have a feeling that the $15/day compensation probably wouldn't buy much at that deli, so I'm glad Seth reassured me that even if he gets "a big trial", he'll still get paid "real $$" at his "real job".

PS. I'm just glad he found the bathroom :)
